Meeting in Vienna Wednesday, OPEC decided against changing the current level of oil production, and elected Venezuela's Alvaro Silva Calderon as its new Secretary General. The U.S., apparently, failed to bring the necessary pressure to bear on the organization. Experts doubt, however, that the cartel will adhere to its own decision. In the meantime, Russia has announced a boost in its export deliveries and an expansion of its export potential.

Most rational guidelines for the CIS countries' integration into the international economic community with the help of the WTO and other international organizations - specifically financial ones - have been formulated at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum (PEF), which ended its work on Friday, RIA Novosti reports, citing a statement made by the Chairman of the Federation Council, Sergei Mironov, who had headed the PEF organizing committee.

German Gref proposes a new tariff hike for "natural monopolies"

The Economic Development Ministry has offered the government a plan to raise tariffs on natural monopolies' output. This would inevitably trigger a considerable inflation growth this year -the inflation rate would creep up to 14.9 to 15.2 percent, instead of the currently expected 12 to 14 percent.

The Congress of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry opened in Moscow with a speech by President Vladimir Putin, who arrived to attend the opening ceremony. He congratulated those present on the 70th anniversary of the CCI, according to a Strana.Ru correspondent. The head of the Chamber, ex-Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, thanked the president for attending the congress and promised that the CCI would take into account the main ideas he expressed in his opening speech.
