Journalists from all over Russia attend presidential press conference

Among the tens of questions put to the Russian president at his press conference in the Kremlin this Monday, one wasabout the possibility of Russia falling foul of radical politics. Referring to the sudden emergence of radical political parties in France and Holland this year, Putin assured the seven hundred journalists in attendence that an analagous situation could not arise in Russia.

Deputy minister tapped to perform former minister’s duties

President Putin signed the decree relieving Aksenenko of his duties on Thursday, apparently at the urging of Prime Minister Kasyanov. Prosecutor General Ustinov is reported to be investigating tax-related criminal charges against the now former communications minister.

For 67% of the Russians, Constitution Day is nothing more than an extra day off

In Russia, Constitution Day (December 12) is not considered a popular holiday. According to the results of an opinion poll this month, for 67% of the people in this country, Constitution Day is simply an additional day off. Every fifth Russian (20%) regards Constitution Day as a holiday. However, a poll conducted in January (2001) showed that only 9% of the citizens viewed that day as a holiday.

According to presidential envoy Victor Kazantsev, the only thing that had been agreed during Saturday’s talks was the mere prospect for future talks. He underlined that he had not felt ready to make any practical moves during his talks with Aslan Maskhadov’s representative, Mr. Zakayev. “Unless separatists make concrete moves, further dialogue is meaningless”, Mr. Kazantsev said.
