The purpose of the visit is to identify locations for radiation control systems. The equipment will be bought and installed with American money - the U.S. State Department has earmarked $24 million for the project.

The United States has ceased to be bound by its obligations under the Russian-American Treaty on the Limitation of Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems, which has been in existence over the past 30 years and one month. State's Deputy Spokesman Philip Ricker confirmed that the ABM Treaty was terminated as of Thursday, but declined any comment.
